What Are Electronic Cigarettes?

by admin on April 9, 2009

An electronic cigarette or “e-cigarette” is an alternative to smoked tobacco products like traditional cigarettes, pipes, or tobacco products.  It runs on a battery that gives inhaled doses of nicotine by delivering a vaporized synthetic nicotine solution.  This vapor also provides a flavor and simulation that is similar to that of inhaled tobacco smoke.  There is no real smoke that is produced from the electronic cigarettes, but the actual result of “smoking” it gives a similar sensation to traditional smoking.

The e-cig usually looks very similar to a regular tobacco cigarette though many are designed to look nothing like an actual one.  A common design is also the “pen-style”, which is named for its close resemblance to a ball point pen.

Here are a few things that make up the composition of an Electronic Cigarette:

1) Led light cover
2) Battery
3) Atomizer
4) Cartridge

When someone inhales through the end, air flow is detected by a sensor that activates a heating component that vaporizes the synthetic nicotine solution.  (The nicotine is stored in the mouthpiece) It is this nicotine that vapor that is inhaled by the operator.  The LED light at the end of the cig lights up which simulates the “burning” of the cigarette.

What does each component do?

The mouthpiece is a tiny disposable plastic cup that is fixed to the end of the tube.  This mouthpiece is what holds they synthetic nicotine solution.  The mouthpiece is more commonly referred to as the cartridge.  The cartridges are equivalent to approximately one pack of cigarettes, depending on which model of electronic cigarette you purchase.   Once the solution runs out, you will no longer be exhaling the water vapor and no nicotine will be in inhaled.  You simply change the mouthpiece or cartridge out with a new one and your are ready to enjoy another round of nicotine.

The lithium-ion battery is rechargeable and can last for quite a while.  The battery is used to activate the heating element which vaporizes the nicotine solution.  The battery also activates the LED light at the end of the device in order to show when it is in use.  The batteries are generally the largest part of the cigarette and can be charged like any other battery.  Depending on the model, you can plug them into a wall, a USB port, or a car charger.

There are also a lot of flavors the nicotine cartridges come in so now you can enjoy a “Smoke” without actually smoking!
